Hurricane Katrina

August 2005

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  Our 3 family homes (Lowana and mine, Uncle Jerry and Aunt Jean's, and Lowana's Dad ("Paw Paw") and her 2 siblings Mark and Theresa's), located on adjacent lots in the Back Bay section of East Biloxi, were all flooded by the 26-foot storm surge.  As a family of survivors of Hurricane Camille in 1969 (with no damage at that time as the previous (but not anymore!) benchmark), we chose not to evacuate as Katrina hit; we rode out the storm, along with several other neighboring families, on the 2nd floor of Paw Paw's house.  The roof held, but our lives were changed forever.
